Each year, a jury of experienced hikers awards the highly sought-after title ‘Hiking Route of the Year’ to a new or recently substantially upgraded route in the Benelux. For regions, public authorities, tourism boards, and route developers, this is the ideal opportunity to bring a remarkable hiking route to the attention of a broad audience of hiking enthusiasts.
The honorary title is not just an award — it is a powerful quality label that inspires confidence among hikers. In addition, the accompanying award often generates extensive media coverage, both in trade publications and the general press, and leads to increasing visitor numbers. The region itself also benefits: its image as an attractive hiking destination receives a significant boost.

After an initial selection (longlist), the jury chooses a number of routes for the shortlist. These routes are then personally walked and evaluated based on criteria such as trail surface, tranquillity and safety, landscape diversity, quality of signage, and the availability of information (such as a website or guidebook).
The big reveal? It takes place during the Fiets en Wandelbeurs in Ghent, where the winner is announced in a festive ceremony.
Would you like to nominate your route for the 2028 edition? This can be done until 1 June 2027 via a form. The hiking jury will then review your submission.
Please note: check the evaluation criteria in advance – this will increase your chances of success.
