Recap IBTC 2025 & Save the date 2026
This year on Thursday February 13, Conference Center Domstad in Utrecht buzzed with energy as the fourth edition of the International Bike and hike Tourism Conference (IBTC) took center stage. The theme “Next Generation Routes & Concepts,” attracted more than 90 experts and professionals from 13 European countries and the United States. They came together for a day of inspiration, innovation, and connection.
A refreshing keynote, an engaging panel discussion, and six interactive breakout sessions. The event provided a platform for cutting-edge ideas and meaningful discussions. Attendees – in the field of policy, education, regional marketing, route development, and research – shared insights, explored new opportunities, and created valuable partnerships to develop new concepts and ideas for cycling and hiking tourism (photo ©Marcel Brans).

Food for Thought: Insights from IBTC 2025
Of course, we couldn’t let IBTC 2025 wrap up without asking participants for their thoughts! What stood out? What did they learn? And most importantly – how can they apply what they’ve learned?
A frequently heard response: The conference offered an inspiring blend of rich, thought-provoking topics and valuable networking moments. Many also expressed a desire for more roundtable discussions – intimate spaces for deeper dives into key subjects. We appreciate this feedback and ideas which we will bring to life in the 2026 edition (photo ©Marcel Brans).

Theme 2026 - Rerouting
For the 2026 edition, we have chosen the theme "Rerouting Cycling & Hiking Tourism". As outdoor recreation booms, many natural areas are feeling the strain - impacting both the environment and the visitor experience.
By reimagining and redrawing cycling and hiking routes, we can inspire travelers to step beyond well-trodden trails and into different, lesser-known landscapes. The big question: How can route planners, regions, and tourism services influence this shift, without displacing the problem? And, just as importantly, how do we change habits and encourage people to venture outside their usual comfort zones? Join us as we navigate these challenges and pave the way for more sustainable, enjoyable outdoor adventures.
