How to design a microadventure?
In the extensive toolbox of means to add more experience to a cycling or hiking route, microadventures are an intriguing tool to design new travel concepts. These adventures are the secret ingredients that turn an ordinary route into an unforgettable experience. You step out of your comfort zone for a moment, your heart starts beating faster, the blood starts flowing just a little faster. It is not so much the traditional highlights that stay with you for a long time, but rather the unexpected events that stick with you, no matter how “micro” they may be.
Brigitte Ars, a passionate micro adventurer and Tourism Experience Design lecturer at Breda University of Applied Sciences, defines microadventures as “a short yet transformative journey, typically lasting one to four days, where you step out of your comfort zone, tackle challenges, embrace unpredictability, and explore new experiences”. Her motto “Seek the unknown in the known, not the known in the unknown” encourages travellers to find extraordinary adventures in their everyday surroundings.
Integrating microadventures offers numerous opportunities for Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) and tour operators to make the experience of an itinerary more intense. But how do you approach such a thing?
During a breakout session at the IBTC, Brigitte not only discusses microadventures as a phenomenon in the world of travelling, but also gives practical strategies to create impactful, accessible microadventures that captivate your audience.
