Research as a basis for improving cycling and walking routes
What is the profile of the Dutch cyclist and hiker? How old are they, where are they from and how often do they set out? And how many kilometers do they cycle or walk per day, how much do they spend on catering along the way, and what conditions do they think high-quality routes should meet?

These are logical questions, but the answers are often hard to find or not available at all. And so there is the risk that you develop a product that does not meet the wishes of the target group at all. You come across the results of this here and there. Poorly marked routes that run through monotonous landscapes or suddenly stop in the middle of nowhere.
In the Netherlands, Wandelnet (Walking Net) and Fietsplatform (Dutch cycling platform) are authorities in the field of cycling and walking. They not only maintain and develop routes and do cycling and walking advocacy, but also analyse existing research. And if necessary, they conduct additional research, on the basis of which they can provide advice for the development of high-quality recreational and tourist routes.

During their breakout session at the IBTC, Frank Hart (Wandelnet) and Eric Nijland (Fietsplatform) will give an insight into user studies of cycling and walking networks and present the results of market research on walking and cycling and leisure lifestyles. They will also discuss the value of geodata for route development. In addition, they review their route database, which contains reliable, high-quality data on more than 45,000 km of recreational routes.
In short, they provide answers to numerous questions. A breakout session not to be missed!
