IBTC: what is on the agenda?
Experts in the field of cycling tourism at home and abroad are again busy working on the development of the programme.
Bike packing routes in Finland
Bike packing is a growing trend in cycling tourism. With bags securely tied to their bicycles the bike packers trek through the countryside for multi-day trips. Two routes specifically for this target group are being developed in Finland: the Arctic and South Coast Bike Packing Trail. How significant is this target group for cycling tourism? And what criteria should a bike packing route meet? Project managers Taneli Roininen en Kristiina Vaano will bring you up to speed with their contributions.
Cycling land Luxembourg
Free public transport, splendid cycle paths and many new routes. Luxembourg is making great progress when it comes to cycling facilities. Showing how a small country can do big things. The Luxembourg Ministers François Bausch (Mobility, Public infrastructure among other things) and Lex Delles (Tourism and other competences) give us a view behind the scenes of Luxembourg’s cycling policies.
Node Routes
A network of routes offers countless benefits for touring cyclists. They can use them to plan their own routes to suit themselves. But how do you tackle the implementation of such a network? Marco Berends, project manager at Danish Cycling Tourism, is involved in several pilot network projects in Denmark. He will tell us more about setting up an integrated system of routes, signposting, and route planners.
Bicycles on the train
This is a subject that was in the IBTC programme previously but has lost nothing of its relevance or importance. Taking bikes on board a train is still a hassle in many cases, despite all the efforts of cycling lobbyists to improve things. Despite this, is there any light at the end of the train tunnel? Ed Lancaster of the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) will sketch out the developments in a European perspective.
Co-operation route platforms
Setting out your own routes or searching for routes: many cyclists do this via route platforms. How can these ‘route websites’ contribute to the promotion of ‘official’ routes? Pascal Brackman of RouteYou will give an overview of the options available.
Quality of the cycling infrastructure
Herbert Tiemens, the experienced cycling civil servant of Utrecht council, cycled this past summer from Utrecht to Lisbon to participate in the Velo-city conference. On his travels he saw major differences in the quality of the (tourist) cycling infrastructure in Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal and encountered dedicated cyclists everywhere along the route.
The cycling and economic strategy in Aragón
José Luis Soro, Minister in the Spanish region of Aragón, will talk about how this area will favour cycling tourism as an important factor to strengthen the local tourism economy.
Please see the programme.
In addition to this, the IBTC will present wide ranging programmes at round table meetings. You will find more information on this in subsequent newsletters.

The IBTC is co-sponsor of the webinar "Bikesperience: routes, living and working in Andalucia (Malaga and Almeria)". This event will showcase what Andalucia has to offer for lovers of cycling, sun and space. Date: 24 November, 13.00-14.00 hrs. Participation is free.
